Oriental Landscape is an original mixed media work inspired by my walking journey along the Kumano Kodō in Japan. This experience, grounded in spiritual pilgrimage, left a lasting impression; where the presence of the land, its history, and its cultural markers created a deep sense of reverence and wonder.
Along the trail, temples, torii gates, Shinto bells and quiet ryokans appeared almost rhythmically within the landscape, each adding to the feeling of moving through a place both physical and spiritual. The terrain itself felt alive, earthy, textured, and constantly shifting and I was drawn to the rich browns and natural forms that defined the journey.
In this work, I’ve focused on translating that connection to the land through layered mixed media, building surface and depth with an intuitive approach. Light plays an important role, suggested through soft rays that move across the composition and which echo moments where the sunlight broke through the canopy and illuminated the path ahead.
Touches of gold and warm tones reference the shimmering trees of autumn, where the landscape seemed to glow with a quiet, almost sacred energy. Oriental Landscape reflects both the physical experience of the walk and the more personal, reflective space it created; an interplay between earth, light, and spirit.
To live with this work is to return to a place of quiet reflection, where earth, light and spirit gently reconnect and unfold over time.
